Wszystko zaczęło się od Quinna Mallory'ego (Jerry O'Connell), który zainteresował się teorią mostu Einsteina i Podalskiego. W swojej piwnicy skonstruował zegar, dzięki któremu mógł na kilka minut przenieść się do równoległej rzeczywistości. Niestety urządzenie nie działało zbyt dobrze, Mallory potrzebował do prawidłowego działania odpowiedniego wzoru fizycznego. Pewnego dnia kompletne równanie przedstawił Quinnowi jego sobowtór. Wytłumaczył mu, że istnieje nieskończenie wielka ilość światów równoległych, w których każdy ma swego sobowtóra, a ściślej masę sobowtórów. Alter-ego Quinna chciał przestrzec Mallory'ego przed przestawieniem współrzędnych w zegarze, ale Quinn nie usłyszał tej przestrogi.
